The Small Arms Trade Bolinda Beginner Guides (Audible Audio Edition) Matthew Schroeder Dan Smith Rachel Stohl Richard Aspel Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books Reviews
Written by two seasoned policy analysts on the conventional arms trade, this introductory guide provides a wealth of useful information about the small arms trade for those just learning about this issue and seasoned practitioners a like. Rich with examples and empirical data, it shows why the world has taken action in the past decade to address the trafficking in these types of weapons and why more action is needed.
As a practitioner in the field of small arms, I have found this book extremely useful, and am not aware of any other books that so thoroughly cover the many dimensions of the small arms trade. Schroeder and Stohl drive home the importance of this otherwise under-reported issue with both theoretical and technical anecdotes, which makes for an easy and fascinating read.
Simplistic. Ignores legal owners-hunters and sport shooters. Lots of cliques. Gun control wish list. The UN should not be involved.
As an investigative journalist specializing in organized crime and black markets, I found this book particularly enlightening. As a beginner's guide, it elucidates clearly how the small arms trade is a global concern. With clear prose, the book's authors make a clear argument for why global leaders should be worried about this under-reported phenomenon.
Not new to the study of small arms, I also found the book a refreshing review that goes beyond a beginner's interests. After reading Schroeder's chapters, I learned a great deal about portable air defense systems in Nicaragua, an important issue for the region I cover and for US leaders.
Overall, I give this book a high mark because it caters to students in their search for a complete understanding of the small arms trade. For venerated researchers and experts, this book is also a worthwhile reference.
I look forward to the next edition.
This book used dubious statistics to promote the UN treaty to reduce small arms. That's it. Nothing on how the arms trade actually works. No end-user certificates, shipping methods or any informative details.
Just a treatise on the history of the AK-47 and RPG; various atrocities committed in different parts of the world; and why passing the UN treaty on gun control is so important.
I won't even donate this one to the public library's book sale.
